A land usage map of Southeast Alaska. There are actually thousands of islands that make up SE Alaska. In fact there are more miles of coast line in this region than in the whole contiguous United States.
Most cruise ship tours pass through Ketchikan, Juneau and Glacier Bay. Most of the small (70-100 passenger) vessels visit the Misty Fjord Nat. Monument's spectacular fjords carved by glaciers, near Ketchikan. Hundreds of waterfalls cascade thousands of feet down the precipitous mountain walls of the fjords. Brown bear, black bear, deer, Mountain goats, porpoise and seals are abundant in this area. Many of the lakes in this area have cabins available for rent from the US Forest Service. Because of the inaccessibility of these remote cabins it is necessary to charter a floatplane to get to them.
