"Alaskan Treasures", depicts old bottles which were found at various abandoned cannery sights in SE Alaska. The basket is a spruce root and cedar basket woven for me by Alaska Native Tsimshian artist, Lindarae Shearer. The beads are faceted "Russian blue" trade beads a highly prized trade item in Alaska prior to the 20th century and still is today. The large abalone button is also a rare item which is about 4 inches in diameter. The Japanese glass fishing balls were recovered in the Aleutian islands. The smallest bottle is an opium bottle. Opium was used by many of the Chinese laborers who worked in Alaska's early canneries and salteries.
